My doctor put me on prenatal vitamins at week six. I guess it's possible for them to cause nausea early on, but you can switch brands, or just take the good ole' flinstone vitamins until week thirteen...better than nothing right?

Since a lot of women do have problems with nausea/vomiting in the early weeks of pregnancy, some doctors don't force the issue of taking vitamins early in pregnancy. Or, they recommend taking them at night to lessen the nausea factor. I've never heard of a doctor forbidding a patient from taking a vitamin.
In an otherwise healthy woman, not taking a vitamin for a few weeks won't do any real harm to either mom or baby. But, I would talk to your doctor about the situation.

I couldn't take them because of the nausea. But they prescribed liquid vitamins for me. You should be taking them in some form. I am shocked that your doc has told you not to! My doc was adimant that I took them, especially during the first 12 weeks, since folic acid is soooo important in the begining.
Unless you are suffering from severe morning sickness, I don't wee why you shouldn't at least try. Also, unless you are very attached to this doc, I would find a new one. Any doc that forbids prenatals for everyone seems a little sketchy. I went to an office that had docs as well as midwifes, and was delivered by a midwife in the hospital.

As long as you eat a varied diet and get the vitamins you need that way, you should be fine with just the folic acid and calcium. It is strange, however, that your doctor would forbid vitamins entirely unless they were making you sick before. My doctor had me on PreCare Conceive before I conceived my son, and then switched me to a regular PreCare prenatal at my first checkup to make sure that I was not deficient in anything since the first trimester is so crutial to the development of a healthy baby. If you don't agree with your doctor's decisions, this is the time to switch so you can find somebody you trust! While your doctor's decisions may be fine, it is important that you are comfortable with his/her decision, and if he/she is not taking your own feelings and concerns into consideration without explanation, that concerns me.

I started taking vitamins on day one and both of my children are just fine. Did your doc give a reason? Have you checked it out?? You can help the nausea by taking the vitamins at bedtime and eating before leaving the bed in the morning (something salty like crackers really helps)

That's odd. Have you had your doctor long? If not, maybe look around. Prenatal is essential. Iron yes, will cause nausea, sometimes. But you can find ones that have lower iron for a while. As your doctor, or another one, about those. I began taking them as soon as I found out, around four weeks. And many doctors suggest taking them if you are thinking of getting pregnant.

You should take vitamins (pre-natal) while trying to get pregnant, and after. If Nausea is a concern then children's chewable vitamins are a good option!
I reccomend all women of child-bearing age who are sexually active to take pre-natal vitamins. It's the best way to give your baby a healthy start, and an easy way to take your vitamins every day.

You dont need vitamins! Eat balanced meals and you will get everything you need. Women have been having babies for thousands and thousands of years without vitamins.
