The engine is running rich - too much fuel on start up, my first guess would be to give the car a service, probably at a former rover dealers

Rover 216 did suffer from this problem have you any engine managment lights on if so you need to read the code this can be done by any decent independant garage.That will lead you in right direction .Regards Mick

i have only heard of "rover" cars here at yahoo answers...must be a foriegn thing. try putting a starter heat shield on the starter and see if that helps
