Josh Gibson. He played for the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords in the ***** Leagues. According to his Hall of Fame plaque it says he hit "almost" 800 home runs.

Wait....American baseball history or any baseball history? American is Josh Gibson. All-time pro baseball wise its Sadaharu Oh who hit 868 for the Yomiuri Giants.

However according to the site below, it says Gibson hit 962 home runs. So if thats correct then Gibson.

Hank Aaron

Plain counting stats, it's Sadaharu Oh.

Counting only the Major Leagues, it's Hank Aaron.

In a single season, it's Barry Bonds.

In a singe season, unassisted, it's Roger Maris.

Adjusted for season length, it's Babe Ruth.

Career, per at bat, it's Mark McGwire, followed closely by Ruth and Jimmy Foxx.

Adjusted for context, it's easily Ruth. Ruth hit more home runs than his contemporaries by a ridiculous margin. Aaron, Bonds, McGwire, and Maris did what they did in hitter-friendly eras.
