Hi, rc1352, my name is Hank. I lived in San Antonio in the late Seventies. Three things I recommend you to see are the Alamo, the river walk, and the Audie Murphy room at the V.A. hospital.
The Alamo is a connection to our past. It is interesting because of the solemn atmosphere you feel when you enter. You almost feel as if you are walking into the past, and that the actual siege of the Alamo is about to begin. It is an eerily realistic tourist sight.
The next place I recommend for you to go is the river walk. The part of the San Antonio river passing through downtown was developed for flood control.
Without flood control the later development and commercialization would not have been possible. After controls for flooding were developed, the eventual benefit of tourism was recognized.
This is a must see tourist sight. There are boats available to take you on a tour. You can also arrange for dinner tours on the boats.
Along the walk there are all kinds of shops and outdoor cafes. I can't stress enough for you to visit the river walk. If I ever make it back to "San Antone," I'm going there, again.
The next place to see is the Audie Murphy room located in the lobby of the Audie Murphy Veterans Administration hospital. As you approach the hospital, there is a really nice statue of Mr. Murphy in the circle.
Inside the lobby of the hospital there is a life-size representation of Mr. Murphy. The model is a simulacrum of Audie Murphy in Army dress greens with all of his medals. It is stunning to see all the "fruit salad" this man was awarded. If you care about America's heroes you will want to see this.
There are all kinds of other memorabilia of Murphy's in the collection too. I'm a combat vet myself, and I marvel that he would be alive after earning all the medals he did. Again, I stress, if you have anyway in your power, you must see the Audie Murphy room at the hospital.
Food, food, food and even more food. You will enjoy the food of San Antonio. I recommend you contact the "World Famous San Antonio River Walk" web site for information. You can reach it either through Google or Wikipedia.
rc1352, there is much more to see in San Antonio than this; the zoo; the Texas Rangers Museum; Sea World; the Battleship, USS Texas... But, along with places to eat, I believe this will keep you busy for a while.
Oh, and if you have the time you should check out the "hill country" just to the west of San Antonio. I hope you enjoy your trip to San Antonio next October, and have fun.

Sea World is worth a day.
The San Antonio Zoo is one of the best in the country.
Of course, it wouldn't be a trip to San Antonio without a visit to the Alamo, a visit to the river walk, and dinner at one of the numerous tex-mex places on the banks of the river.
