Coming from a nursing back ground gastrointestinal comes to mind. Context is very important. I know soldiers have been referred to as GI's.

It has two meanings. Firstly it was stamped on all equipment issued to the US army in WWII being short for Government Issue. However it is more likely to be the description of Draft Papers when a call up to the army indicated that you would start as a General Infantryman. Take your pick.
