Short term - continue on with my normal life. However, I"d cut out all driving except if I really needed to (getting to and from work, babysitters, and medical issues)
Long term - buy a car that is extremely efficient with gasoline.

Not go anywhere in my car, except to work and stores. In the long-term, I would buy a car that get the best mileage possible and might buy a motorscooter to get around (which gets far better gas mileage).

Carpool, if possible. Buy a hybrid car.
If not, we'd probably need to move somewhere with publis transportation, if we could afford it. We lived in San Francisco a few years, and although we had a car, we definitely could have lived without one.
