Its a generic 40 gig usb 2.0 hdd, Device manager say its ok, but I cant seem to use it? Any ideas?

Being a friends drive lent to me to download some files I dont know the manufacturer to get a new driver, is there a generic one? Cheers

IT IS NOT A DRIVER. Denver Jeff gave you the correct answer. You must activate the drive.

Try this:

Go into Control Panel
Switch to Classic View
Select Administrative Tools
Select Computer Management
Open the Storage branch and select Disk Management

It should show the device. Right-click on it and on the pop-up menu select Change Drive Letter and Paths... You might be able to assign a drive letter.

since you dont have the driver, you might have to do some looking around, you should ask your friend. if he doesnt remember, you should look online like a tech sites or at ebay or something and see if you can find similar drives. then you can look for the driver.
otherwise, its worthless

try reinstalling the drivers
if its an old version of windows do start--->run--> sysedit
and goto autoexec.bat and type in lastdrive=z
save exit restart pc.

or it might be the drive might need to formated/paritioned i would check disk management from device manager admin tools.

drivers. dont use the ones that came with it. go dl the most current. also try updating your bios.. youve got software conflicitons somewhere.
