No, that doesn't make them worse then anyone else.
My sister can't read but she is a great person. She's a hard worker. She has been working since she was 13, she is 55 today and still working. I'm glad she lives well.

No one deserves to live in poverty unless they really have no choice, or if they choose to. People who cannot read and do not have a disability should get up off thier butt and do something about it.

"Poverty is but a state of mind." The mind-culture of those whom in their behavior/interactions maintain and reinforce a state of poverty reap the result of their actions.
There are numerous cases of people who can read as well as those who can't read that live in poverty. However in like manner for both those who can read as well as those who cannot read, there are also cases where poverty is not their experience.
So reading, though it may represent an opportunity to enhance one's ability to communicate and disseminate knowledge, it is by no means the only mechanism of achieving this.
The question could then be posed- "Do people who can't read aspire poverty as a state of mind?"
Whatever you truely desire, by virtue of the culture of your mind you will achieve.
"Whatever you sow, you will reap, and in so doing what you reap is what you deserve."

Depends on the reason why they can't read. If they are mentally retarded or have serious learning disabilites then no they do not deserve poverty. If they were just lazy and didn't bother learning then yes.

No one 'deserves' to live in poverty. Most people, especially in the US, are in poverty simply because they have made a number of bad choices in their lives. They chose not to go to school, they chose not to study while in school, they chose to skip school. They chose to 'hang out' with other losers. They chose to use drugs, they chose to abuse alcohol, they chose to have unprotected sex. They made a number of unwise choices.

Of course not! Most people who can't read are not poor because they can't read, but the opposite is true; i.e.: they can't read because they are poor and their parents couldn't afford to finance their education. I advise you to read something about the vicious cycle of poverty.
