What you are generally seeking is chords in the same key. Here's a start from http://www.ezinearticles.com/?Basic-Guitar-Chords:-How-to-Easily-Master-the-Guitar-Chords-You-Must-Know&id=79784
A Family (Key of A): A, D, E
D Family (Key of D): D, Em, G, A
G Family (Key of G): G, Am, C, D, Em
C Family (Key of C): C, Dm, Em, F, G
An amazing quantity of great classic tunes are key of G, so that's a great set to play around with, and GCD variations are very common.

D F#m Bm G
G D Em C
D A G A ( like when you say nothing at all)
A Am D A - F#m D - Bm C#m D E - A D E (like make it real)
go to guitartabs.cc and check the chords and observe the combination of the chords

Find the Nashville Number System on line or from a book. It's one of the most helpful things for a song writier. A I iii IV V progression always sounds good. For example: E C#m A B, or G Em C D. Blues Progressions always work too (a I IV V progression) like A D E or CFG

The first 4 chords combination: the first, the sixth in minor, the forth, the fifth, ie: C-Am-F-G (C based), A-F#m-D-E (A based), D-Bm-G-A (D based), and so on.
The second 4 chords combination: the first, the third in minor, the forth, the fifth, ie: C-Em-F-G (C based), A-C#m-D-E (A based), D-F#m-G-A (D based), and so on.

George Lynch has lots of scales and chords which are tricky, very creative and some even have long fretboard stretches ala' Yngwie and Al Di Meola.

Amin, G, F, and E. Sounds kind of spanish-y. I use them in bar-chord form b/c it's easier.
G,C, and D for about everything.
D and E go well together.
