I've taught at some schools that required students to put together a portfolio in order to graduate. Why? Because it's a way for them to showcase their work to potential employers, thus helping them gain employment after leaving school.

You're right, it's hard to decide what to put in there because you have to choose things that would be relatively easy to explain to someone who knows nothing about it.

For example, you could put a sample of a paper you wrote that got a high grade. This shows that you can write well. And if it's something that has positive comments on it from your teacher, then that makes an excellent reference!

If you're particularily proud of something, you could include it to show potential employers why you are proud of it. This illustrates your ability to speak and explain your thinking, and also allows you to take pride in your work.

If you got high marks on your report card, you might want to put that in there. What a great way to show how well you did in school.

In other words, include things that you're proud of and make you look good to someone else. And don't go overboard, just a couple of things that you could whip out and show me is sufficient.

In our school in Pennsylvania, We have to do a portfolio and like a senior project thing before we graduate. We have to do a project like mine is working with the junior high musical for 3 years and then I have to do a portfolio and a PowerPoint on what I did and stuff like that before I can graduate.

I had to do it for a class in 8th grade as a final project.

Count it as a positive experience...I STILL use mine

It will help you keep all of your stuff organized...just keep it all up to date. Its also really good practice for interviews.

Put in your honor rolls and all of that stuff....but when I did mine I also put in pictures of volunteer stuff I did and typed up a little paragraph about what the day was like. If you don't have any...go volunteer a couple of times. Your interviewers will love it. Make sure to dress to impress!
