I have a tea called Pasak Bumi or Tongkat Ali which is made from indonesian tree root. It effects hormones and boosts testosterone in males up to 400% by scientific study, but It usually makes you very moody, more easily angered, but in a natural state perphaps depressed, similarly to the effect of those who go onto steroids and kill themselves of the depression induced by the hormone imbalance. No matter what my state though, controversly happy or sad, I always feel most pleasant and content after a minimal amount ( a few minutes, perphaps 3 to 5 and up) of deep breathing, concentrating on my breath. Has anyone else experiences these profound effects on the human psyche?

Yes, deep breathing helps you feel better. It helps your body to get rid of stress hormones, slows your heart rate, increases oxygen supplies to the brain and other tissues, and that's just for starters. I find yoga breathing especially helpful - inhale for a count of 4, hold it for 7, and exhale for 8. :)

I do a deep breathing routine daily as time permits and always during meditation and also to center myself through the day. The obvious is that breathing is a necessity of life, deep breathing is a conscious decision to maintain mental awareness. That mental awareness has benefits, a few you already mentioned, when I have to make a important decision I'll use my breath to center myself before I make it, before I speak in public when I realize my stomach is tight from nervousness, conscious breath helps me to stay in the here and now - the moment, thats where I have to be at when I meditate, right where I am sitting. Myself and people I know use it to not act out of anger, again to quiet the mind, to bring life to that focal point. Just keep breathing....deeply. Peace
