In some ways, making them angry is playing with them. They are aggresive, and really, aggression is their natural way of living. So if you try to play with them, or put a colorful item near the bowl, they will spread their gills and get angry. Its playful because its their nature

You're giving human emotions to your betta. He's really only got 3 modes of being. Just hanging out. Defending his turf. And eating. Some betas are very aggressive will flare are pretty much everything. (More common with crowntails.) Other bettas are much more mellow. Flaring at getting all riled up isn't bad for him as long as it not constantly and he can hide some where if he wants. My 2 males are generally more active, and I think they are happier after their bi-weekly 1/2 hour of smack talk. (Note that my bettas don't fling themselves against the glass.)
Other than that you can have a long of fun training your betta to take food from your fingers. Some people have taught their bettas to jump for it. Personally after a harrowing experience during tank maintenance. When one of bettas jumped out of a cup into the sink, and flopped in the garbage disposal. I'm not doing anything to encourage jumping.

I don't think there is. I used to have two in separate fish tanks but next to each other so they can see each other and they would get angry and crash into the glass. It was so funny.
