You might try something something like I was thinking how much I enjoy going to the movies with you. Why don't we go today?

You could say something like, "I saw an ad on TV yesterday for this really scary movie...it looks good!" and hope he takes the hint. Why are you scared to tell your boyfriend you want him to go to the movies with you?
