why in this country do we beat and rape women at a much higer rate than women in other counrties? In northern europe, where u can buy porn at the grocery store, they don't have such a high rate of violence against women? what is you thought?

Most of you answered with good solid points. In some places it is not a crime and women are treated poorly all over the world. So to be more specific, i should ask "Why...compared to other rich countries."
For those of you who didn't beleive the stats: go to www.huppi.com and look for "Comparison of US and other Countries"
Rape: 37.20 (reported) out of every 100,000 people while Sweden is 15.70, Denmark is 11.23 and Japan 1.4.
thanks for sending me to do my research. so the questions still stands..."why?" especially in a country where we do have many rights and privledges.
PS. No need to try to guilt trip me because women have it worse in other countries like So. Aftica, Afganistan etc. the question is valid, and we should keep asking it or our own liberation is at risk.

*Thanks for considering the question. Peace*
oh yeah...i already know i can't spell

Because the U.S. has such a conservatice stance on human sexuality, it causes people to act out of frustration.

Prostitution is illegal here, which lead to several hundred thousands of women selling themselves illegally, wasting taxpayer's money when they do get tried and punished for something they are doing with their own body. Also, prostitutes are one of the most common victims of violent rape and murder.

Pornography is generally only sold in adult stores or seen online. It is regulated by the government unnecessarily. Overall, this causes a stigma among Americans that open sexuality is wrong, and that it is something people should keep inside their homes and not talk about or be proud of. This idea is archaic and made sense in more conservative times.

The shame associated with sexuality in America causes people, mostly men, to act out. Because a man cannot have no-strings-attached sex with a prostitute or go to the grocery store down the street and buy a porn magazine without feeling ashamed, he must act out his very natural urges some other way, maybe raping a woman who doesn't seem like she could protect herself. Some men probably associate the stigma towards sex with the shame and pain they put onto their victims when they attack them.

Many Americans also hold traditional opinions that women are not equal to men - that they can be used as objects, and shouldn't have a voice or a choice in what happens to them. This is probably why so many men in America don't have issues with beating their wives - especially if they saw the same thing happening in their own home growing up.

Yea, I know there's no excuse for raping somebody. But as a society, we need to realize that we are only human, and that sex, especially for men, is a basic human need. We have hormones in our bodies that tell us to mate, because it is instinct and it's how we as a species survive. By making sex more obtainable among consenting partners, the rates will go down and the stigma associated with sex in America will also go down.

Apparently you're unaware of what is happening to women in the Congo, in sweat shops around the world, in poverty-ridden areas that we never hear about. Are you SURE the US has the highest rate of crimes against women? We are blessed enough to often have a voice in this country. Many women in other countries do not have this protection.

In my opinion, there are many countries with much higher sex crime rates, but in those countries, rape and beating your wife isn't considered a crime. She's a possession and the husband 'owns' her.

As far as the USA goes, it might have something to do with booze. Europeans aren't nearly as alcoholic as we are either.

I have a hard time believing this. Please back it up with some references.

Also, are we talking about the same laws? In many third world countries, for example, a man can beat his wife, so it's not a crime, where as here, it is, so the same act in both countries only "counts" for this in one.

Too many holes in this to answer your question without more information.

Sex crimes include alot more than just rape. For one thing we are larger than all the European countries. If you counted the EU as a country it would likely be comparable.

It could be that the US seeks out and tries them more while Europe ignores it.

There isn't "more"... it's just reported more. In other countries it goes unreported and often the victims are killed so they can't report it.

Anyone can see porn for free online. You're supposition that more readily available porn would make men less inclined to violence against women is just absurd.

Jesus,i don't believe I'm reading this answers. are you all insane? have you ever been to other countries to say that? I'm from EU and everything about sex that is illegal at US is illegal here so.. wake up you stupids. you are larger by surface and have more population and as only nimbleminx noticed it is often reported but not many more victims get killed. this is because our legal system is not so great, not because your imbecile ideas.

Because in other countries alot of time prostitution is legal so people are not as driven to commit sex crimes.

Whats considered a "crime" in the US isn't necessarily a crime in other countries.

Do some research...you'll be shocked.

That's not true. Do you watch the news to see what's going on out there. We just actually punish the people for doing it.
