i realize that this is an international forum, and people who have learned english as a foreign language do use it, and their use of english is not perfect. that doesn't worry me...i respect them for learning english...

but i've really noticed, especially with teen questions on this board, that the spelling and grammar is really awful! it's a little bit alarming...is this an indication of the quality of education our children our receiving in north america? where is the respect for the language? what is the point of having a language if it is not used properly?

maybe i'm just being stuck-up...but i mean, come on people, there's even a spell check on here...

Yes, the grammar and spelling are alarming indeed. Especially disappointing are those posters who criticize others but blatantly refuse to use capital letters at the beginning of sentences.

If you think it's bad here, you should go to the Pregnancy and Parenting forum. "I thnk i'm peregant...wot shud I do? do i haf to take a pegnacy test?" My husband is one of the smartest people I know, but he's a lousy speller. Some people just can't spell to save their life, but something like what you're describing in your question is ridiculous. I think in some cases, the kids are all doing it...maybe it's cool now to abbreviate certain words (i.e. wot for what). I'm an old bat...turned 30 last year...so I don't keep up with the kids these days. :)

Honestly, it doesn't really bother me. I, myself, have been guilty of using improper puncuation and bad spelling. It's just a discussion forum and I do not really see the need to be all proper about it. And I'm lazy. *grin* I figure other folks, who are otherwise intelligent people are just as lazy as me.

Then again, perhaps I am giving too much credit to people. Maybe they just really don't know any better. I suppose that is alarming.

I totally agree, a lot of the messages are similar to the text method used on mobile phones etc, but some is so bad, it's difficult to read & understand the message.

I agree! There are way too many correct "slang" expressions here to believe that these mistakes aren't being made by English speaking people.

Especially when you see there is a "check spelling" button right on the page.

You'll get a lot of responses with improper spelling to this question - specifically because it is a spelling question, but
EBONICS IS ANNOYING!

I am a little OCD I think about grammar errors...
I hate it when people use the wrong form of your, you're, their, there, it's, its, to, too...etc...
I can't stand that!
I think we all get a little lazy on here though.
