i would like to use this device to activate a radio to scare away varmits.

Ask your local radio shack. Lowes might have specific animal deterrent ones.

my parents have some in their house, keeps all bugs and stuff away, except scorpions! They got theirs at a hardware store (Lowes or Home Depot) but you could also find online
