look in your university's library. They are likely to have a collection of past dissertations that could give you some inspirations. Think about what really interestds you about your course and picka small area to study.

Assuming you're pursuing a doctorate, the KEY is that your dissertation will have to be original work, which makes topic selection a bit harder. Generally speaking, schools assign you a thesis advisor who has to pre-approve your topic and guide you along every step of the way in its writing. I would suggest you start by talking to your advisor.
You could also look up what others have done their dissertations on for some possible ideas. But keep in mind that you have to do original work.
