We are relocating to Pittsburgh and need neighborhood recommendations... we are crunchy (as in natural, organic, and holistic) so need to be near some type of health food store or co-op and want to be near parks we can take our boys to as well.

The Shadyside area of Pittsburgh is a quality place to raise a family. It borders Oakland, which means that you will be just a stones throw from the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. Both schools have extensive "green" areas and parks to provide you with hours of quality time with your children. A number of the regions top medical facilities are also located in that area. UPMC Pittsburgh is one of the nations premiere medical centers, and the first hospital to pioneer organ transplantation. There are a number of cultural venues in that area, not to mention you are only a very short commute to Downtown Pittsburgh. There are a number of good health food type markets in the Shadyside, and surrounding areas. You are also just a short drive to Pittsburgh's Strip District. "The Strip" as it is called by locals, is the hub for general merchandise, as well as the home of many produce merchants, and food suppliers.

If you would need any more specific info, I would be happy to help you out, just shoot me an email. The Shadyside neighborhood, while being "upscale" has not lost it's small town feel, I think you will love it there. I wish you well, and hope you have many years of enjoyment in the Pittsburgh area. Allow me to be the first (and I am sure, not the last) to welcome you to our fair City of Champions.

There really isn't a better neighborhood in Piitsburgh if you are "crunchy". Whole Foods has it's only location in Shadyside, along with regional based Giant Eagle's Market District.

Additionally, Shadyside is extremely close to many parks, inlcuding Shenley Park, which is quite large. There really isn't a decision where to go for you - Shadyside is exactly where you want to be. If I move, that's where I'd go.
