Can I say that there is nothing at all wrong with supporting teams of any size. With Palace and Charlton the rivalry is mainly because they are both south London Teams and they are of a similar size so they often find themselves in the same division. Although Millwall is the closest team to Charlton.
An extensive poll of football fans a few years ago regarding who they view as their rivals revealed that Palace fans see Brighton as their biggest rivals followed by Millwall and then Charlton. Whereas Charlton fans see Millwall as 1st rivals followed by Palace and then West Ham.
Charlton fans dislike Palace fans from the time in 1987/90 when Charlton were forced to share Crystal Palace's ground. Charlton say Palace nearly bankrupted them by raising ticket prices - I am not sure about that and would ask where Charlton would beif Palace hadn't helped them with ground sharing.
In an isolated and unusual incident two and a half years ago some Palace fans attacked Charlton fans at a local train station an action which resulted in 7 people being jailed. I have to stress that this is unusual and that for 99.9% of fans the rivalry exists but is a fairly minor one in terms football rivalries in general.
The Palace v Brighton rivalry dates back over 30 years to a time when there was much more violence and holliganism in football and in a way it was used to provide an outlet for Palace holligans. They would have been severely spanked by Chelsea, West Ham or Millwall so instead turned their attention on Brighton which had the additional benefit of offering an occasional day out by the sea.
