My birth control is called Mircette. Would changing help? My boyfriend says I get cramps because of having sex.

I've been on Mircette for over two years. To me this doesn't sound like something that should go along with the pill--usually it makes cramps better if it affects them at all. My period has actually gotten very short and light since I started taking Mircette. Since Mircette is an "ultra low dose" pill (that's the group of pills that contain the lowest amount of estrogen currently available), I doubt that your hormone level is too high. Incidentally, there are 20 mcg estrogen in each Mircette pill and 25 mcg estrogen in the lowest-dose week of Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, so Mircette is the lower-dose pill of the two.

Mircette has a high progestin potency, which is supposed to help with cramps. The exact combination of hormones in it, however, just might not be right for you. I'd suggest talking to your gynecologist about the specific problem or problems you have with the pill, and perhaps switching to a different one. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error to find the one that's best for you.

The link below is a chart and explanation of the different hormones in different pills and how they relate to different problems. Take it with a grain of salt, however. It says that Ortho Tri Cyclen (original, not Lo) is good for relieving depression, but it actually made me depressed. Work with your doctor to decide on a good pill for you.

I take Ortho-Tricyclen Lo, and my cramps are more painful & more dominant than when I was off of the pill. The hormones in birth control wreak havoc on your body. If you've only been taking the pill for a short time, your body is still adjusting to it, and will continue to behave weirdly. The cramps might go away or they might not. Just depends. Good luck! It sucks being female, sometimes, doesn't it? :)

Changing brands might help. Try getting one with a lower dose of hormones, like Ortho Tri-Cyclen Low.
