They have very large sharp claws and can do a lot
of damage with them and their teeth. However they
are generally sluggish, relatively placid animals as
long as they are not disturbed.

They are not bears (though they are often called
koala bears because some people think they look
like teddy bears) they are marsupials related to
kangaroos, wombats, possums, etc. Also they
are not drugged by the chemicals in the eucalyptus
leaves. It used to be thought they were, and that
this explained why they are so sluggish. However
this has been tested and found not to be so. The
reason for their sluggishness is probably that they
must conserve energy as much as possible because their food is not very high in energy content and it contains so many chemicals that
have to be detoxified. I certainly wouldn't want to
have to live on a diet that contained a lot of
eucalyptus oil.

when I used to work at the zoo, the koalas there were really mellow and did not mind being petted. I am sure a wild one would be quite different.

Well, when you take them away from the eucalyptus tree they are in, they are quite mean and can do some damage to you with their claws and teeth. The eucalyptus tree is like a drug to them, and just like any drug addict, they get quite belligerent if you try to take them away from their drug.

You don't want to try to pet them. They aren't as cute and cuddly as they look.
