didn't Israel learn the last time they went into lebanon that it was a bad idea since it is the equivilent to the US's Vietnam era. I do agree actually with the European powers that Isr Responce could have been more calculated but they chose brute force over diplomacy. Israel's PM OLMERT is simply trying to show that he to has muscle and that he will be as hawkish as Sharon was in his early days.

Israel and the Moslem extremists groups: Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran and so on will NEVER learn to live together and get along, unless there is a fundamental change in the region.

The Israelis and Moslems both claimed the region. By the time of Christ the Jews were slaves of Rome and in decline. By the fall of the Roman Empire the Jews were exiled from the region. Then the Moslems fought the Christians to keep control over the area. After the 4th Crusade, the Moslems were left in control and that control was not challenged again until after WWII.

When the Allies saw the horrible crimes committed against the Jews by Hitler they felt very bad. Especially since many of those nations had refused Jewish refuges trying to flee Hitler. So they decided to create the state of Israel, and pay them war damages. This was the first time that the Jewish people had a homeland since the time of Christ. The Jews were paranoid so they bought up a lot of military hardware, enacted universal conscription and hunkered down to defend themselves, after Hitler who could blame them. Meanwhile the Palestinians, who had owned the land for centuries, were kicked out, and given nowhere else to live. No other country wanted to take them in so they had to live like refugees on their own soil. But, nobody cared, the Moslems were weak, and didn’t have a strong military or strong presence in the world. Israel could defend herself so it didn’t matter.

Then oil was discovered. At first the oil companies from the Allies of WWII were making the money. Then the Moslem countries nationalized the oil wells and refineries so they were making the money. Now they became a world power and the Middle East was an important region of the world. The world’s appetitive for oil only grew, and is still growing. The Moslems felt bad for the Palestinians. The Jews had been kicked out of the region over a year ago. Now they were back. So the Moslems were able to found and fund Moslem extremist groups to fight the Nation of Israel. They developed the slogan that they would drive Israel into the sea. Egypt and Syria even went to war with Israel and they were both soundly defeated, so direct warfare wasn’t the solution. In 1982 Iran founded Hezbollah, with the intent to destroy Israel. Other Moslem extremists groups were also formed. They got rich off the huge oil profits made by the oil rich Moslem nations of the Middle East. Egypt finally negotiated a peace settlement with Israel and got out of the whole mess, but the war was still continuing with the other Moslem nations.

Hamas was one such group. In addition to being a terrorist group, they were a support group for the Palestinians. They formed schools and gave out finical assistance to the Palestinians. So when Y. Arafat died, and the first Palestinian free election was held it should have been no surprise that Hamas came into power. The world waited to see what they would do. Hamas continued its terrorist acts against Israel, so the sanctions were kept in place. When things got too tough for Hamas to continue the fight suddenly Hezbollah attacks. All these groups have the same goal, the destruction of Israel: they are supported by Syria, Iran, and many private Moslems (including a lot of rich Arabs). If is Hezbollah is put down then some other Moslem extremist group would pick up the struggle.

All this is building rage, a rage that has forgotten its sources and only knows more rage. One of the biggest goals of Hezbollah is to force Israel to release Moslem extremists, terrorists that were captured by Israel. If Israel doesn’t release them then the fighting continues. If Israel does release them then the newly released terrorists will continue to fight. They will want revenge on Israel for what they have done, and they still have their original goal of driving Israel into the sea. So the war continues. Meanwhile religious schools in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and elsewhere continue to preach hate against the west and Israel. The oil rich Moslems continue to fund the terrorist groups and all the fighting and killing just breeds more hate. The cycle continues. Israel can’t attack Syria or Iran, because Syria and Iran hasn’t attacked them. They can’t attack the other Arab countries because they are all at peace with Israel. Even Lebanon doesn’t want to attack Israel. All these attacks are being conducted by terrorists, who slip through the fingers like water. As the US has seen in Iraq and Afghanistan it is almost impossible to fight the terrorists. The terrorist organizations are so strong that they form their own governments. Lebanon can’t control Hezbollah; if they tried to put down Hezbollah then the Lebanonise government would fall. If that happened that a radical Moslem group would take control, as it happened in Iran. Iran would make sure of it, as well as the other rich Moslem extremist groups. The last time Hezbollah attacked Israel, Israel invaded Lebanon. The fighting soon got out of hand. It was street to street with heavy civilian casualties. The UN decided to send in peacekeepers. The US Marines went in. Hezbollah didn’t want to stop their war so they drove a truck bomb into the Marine barracks killing most of them, the US pulled out. This taught all the Moslem extremist groups that terrorism works. It also turned Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, into a War Zone for years, and started all those plane hijackings of the 1980s, and lead to 9/11 and the recent terrorism assaults. When Hezbollah had enough of their war with Israel they retreated into the population and rebuilt; to wait until they would attack again--not if, but when.

As long as the cycle of hate continues, as long as the oil rich Moslems keep funding the extremists, as long as Iran and Syria fight a proxy war, through the extremists, with Israel then the fighting will continue. The US gets most of its oil from its own reserves and from Canada. Nations like China and Japan don’t have very many reserves. China’s economy is growing; soon they will be requiring as much oil, as the US does now. Japan has a huge oil hungry population. Therefore the price of oil isn’t going down anytime soon, and as the price increases then poorly producing oil wells will become profitable again. So the cycle keeps going on. Soon Iran is going to develop the nuclear bomb. Israel has bombed their bomb making plant in the past, so the Iranians buried the new one deep underground. It will take a huge attack, probably nuclear, to destroy that plant. If the plant isn’t destroyed then Iran will supply nukes to the Moslem extremist groups and they WILL use them. They know that terrorism works, so they could attack the west. They could use them to destroy Israel. If that happens then the war could get out of control as the other nations scramble to get as much oil out of the region before it is destroyed or turned into radioactive ruin.

Peace to the region isn’t coming anytime soon. The war in Northern Ireland went on for almost two centuries. After a while it became a tradition. The people weren’t even sure why they were fighting anymore, except that their fathers and their grandfathers fought, and the enemy just killed your friends yesterday so the war goes on. They same thing is going on in the Middle East. We can’t root out the Moslem extremist groups, we can’t stop their funding, the situation is only getting worse, the cycle of hate, and teaching hate is continuing, and soon nuclear weapons might enter the equation. It will require a fundamental change in the region before peace can get a chance.

When? When the rest of the Arab world recognises Israel as a nation that has the right to exist. And that dispute their best efforts sine 1948 they have not removed Israel from the map. In fact they have come out loser in EVERY scuffle they get into.

Maybe Israel did over react. But to say their response is not calculated is wrong. Israel targets a tank, a runway, a buildings or a vehicle. Hezbollah, they target an entire town in hopes of hitting something. Hezbollah is the real brute force user. Pretty much with Israel you have to worry about the bullet with your name on it. With Hezbollah you worry about the one that says to whom it may concern.

Some times I think you have to get the Arabs attention before you treat them nice. How long had it been since Israel pulled out of Lebanon? How many times had they fired on Lebanon since that time? Hezbollah and Hamas started this mess and now ALL the people of Lebanon and Gaza will pay the price. There will be some Israelis that die as well. But the majority of deaths will be Arab and due to collateral damage.

And what is Hezbollah trying to show? Since Syria left Lebanon their influence has been waining. They had to show they are still a factor. If people like Hamas and Hezbollah weren't attacking Israel they would be steady loosing power. They don't know anything else. *LOL* Kinda like Democrats hating Bush. OHMIGAWD What are the Democrats going to do in 2009 when Bush is gone?

It will happen when outsiders stop interfering there.

Many neighboring arab countries are supporting and goading on the Palestinians to fight for their rights. And USA and other western countries are helping and goading on Israelies to fight for their rights.

This conflict cannot end as long as outsiders keep pouring money and all kinds of help to continue the conflict. But it will end when the money and the inflamatory rhetoric from outsiders dries up.

Neither the Israelis nor the Palestinians will be able to afford to continue the conflict on their own without any outside help. And economic circumstances will force both to negotiate in good faith and find a mutually acceptable agreement.

The USA should lay off hands from the Israelis and let them do the job right for the powerless. Lebanese govt will one day thank the Israelis for peace. No govt should allow any armed groups, (Syria & Iran) to hold hostage an entire nation and people.
As for the Palestinians, kick out Hamas & conies, re-elect Abbas to end hostilities and take the first step to nationhood first. Last time they were given 95% of land but they stupidly threw it away. Peace.

Geez - get some history classes. Jews, through out time, have gotten along with just about everyone. Sure the Jews would get along with the Palestinians. That's not the issue. Vice-versa is the issue, and that will never happen.

That would never happen. The Palestines are muslims and muslims do not like (they actually hate) anyone who is not a member of their cult religion. Muslims love to kill those who are not part of their religion and to create war with those who have different beliefs.

DIPLOMACY?

Okay, point to one instance where that has actually worked in dealing with the Islamic fanatics who launch assault after suicide assault upon Israel.

To answer the question, probably never.
