"Xanthelasma palpebra is a common type of xanthoma that appears on the eyelids" - from NIH's Medline Plus (link below)

Most important is to make sure she really is ok in terms of her lipids (which include triglycerides as well as cholesterol) and has no signs of diabetes, liver problems, or any other underlying medical condition which these deposits can be associated with.

If these are not symptoms of an underlying problem, then she and her doctor will have to weigh the impact (cosmetic, eyelid function) of the patches versus the pros and cons of trying to remove them. You can do some preliminary research to see what general options and recommendations are regarding removing them to prepare her for an informed discussion with her doctor about it.

btw, I have one of these on my right eyelid (it's pretty small) and so far, it doesn't get in the way of how my eye works so I'm leaving it alone. I'm not a fan of the idea of people messing with my eyes! But yeah, if it got a lot bigger and I had good insurance, I would ask my doctor what my options were and what her recommendations are. Good luck to your mom.

These are common and recurrent. They are called Xanthasma and occur in the upper and lower areas around the eye. There are ways to treat this by seeing a dermatologist. They can be treated with a liquid acid that causes them to scab and come off. They can come back and the treatment has to be repeated every now and again. Varies from person to person. They are not harmful and often come regardless of a person's cholesterol level.

Just the luck of the draw!

I think i know what you are talking about. They look like yellowish spots, right? Sort-of weird shaped zit like things? My mother has them too, and she was told by her dermatologist that she could have a facial peel done that might eliminate that type of thing. However, they can come back. It's not the same kind of peel they use for the rest of the face because it's in the eye area. Has to be done by a derm.! Have her go see a derm. doc. Consultations are usually not expensive, just to find out what her options are. My mom hasn't done anything about hers yet. They are small and her glasses hide them mostly.
