When I lived in Hollywood, California people would always assume that I smoked, and they would constantly ask me for change, or to bum a cigarette. They are shocked and dismayed when they find out that surprise surprise some people actually don't smoke. By the way these individuals are mostly transient types. Not homeless, but definitely in that direction.
Sometimes I say hi to people on the street, but each situation is different. It's just not very practical to say hi to each and every person you meet on the street. Maybe a little bit, just don't go overboard.

It is sad isn't it that too friendly is seen in the same light as some loon walking down the street jabbering about aliens. I plan to keep doing it anyway. For every glare I get and every time I'm ignored I also often get the gentle soul who responds with such a look of gratitude I'd swear nobody had spoken to them in days.

I say hi back!!!!
I think most people though just want to be left alone. Everyone is in a big hurry with things to do that they just want to get where they're going. They're not trying to be mean or unfriendly, they're probably caught off gaurd because no one else says hi to random people.

I don't know about other people but I say hi to people when I take a walk and they smile back. I even say hi to objects like the light poles, signs, buses, cars, airplanes, ... I say hi because that makes me appreciate people and things around me more. I don't say hi to get a hi back. I say hi because I want to.

If they look at me as we pass each other, I usually say hi and often they say hi back. In the U.S., I think the average person mistrusts strangers and there are probably friendly places and some less friendly ones as well. This applies to neighborhoods as well.

I've lived in the South my entre adulthood, and people who are from the city here still have the country air about them. So, pretty much everyone says "hi" if you happen to make eye contact.

Well I'm from the South, so everyone basically knows everyone else. And if we don't know you, we can't wait to get to know you. So I'll say 8 out of 10 times they'll say hi back to me! It's awesome. I love friendly folks!!!!

People say Hi to me all they time. Things have changed now people are more afraid to speak and a lot are unhappy. Don't let that bother you it is the sign of the times. Keep up your friendliness.that's; their problem

The guys nod and the ladies say hi. Sometimes I do not reply depending on where I am, and what the person "seems" like.
