I would say telford as its a combination of new and old. The new bit is: the area that it covers was classified as a new town back in 1967, so combining about 6-7 old towns & villages to make up what is now known as telford. It has a new town centre, with all the high street shops that you want, then it has the quaint villages & town centrels scattered arround the main town.
At the Southern end of Telford you have what is one of the most important sites in the World Called the Severn Gorge or Iron Bridge. Its the site of the worlds first Iron Bridge and sparked of what is now called the industral revelution.... Which means that everything to see or do has been infulenced and developed from there...I.E The Railway.
Also Telford is situated on the old Roman Road Watlin Street and just outside the town is an Iron Age hill fort or two & the Roman town of Wroxeceter giving the area plenty of history. Telford is also close to Birmingham so you can go there for the night life!

the great Uk town would be Luton. Such small town as compared to London, has its own airport and many more travel centres to enable you move towns when you feel it. The people there are so friendly that even you can make dozens.
Let us talk about how nice the shopping centre, it is fabulous, where quality products are sold for cheaper prices.
restaurants, oh stop it! Ladies and Gents, let us go shopping etc

I haven't seen the book but the greatest Uk town has to be London, because it has everything - great clubs, restaurants etc. as well as serious places like museums, art galleries, masses of theatres, touristy history places like the Tower of London, lots of parks to chill out in, boat trips up and down the river, some of the greatest football clubs (like Arsenal) in the world....need I go on....

LONDON!!!!!!!! Because is just the best city in the world, you can find anything you're looking for, if you can't find it.. it doesn't exist, and well.. it's just like a good luck charm too, good things started happening to me as soon as got there, and it's so beautiful!. You can also do whatever you want, people mind their own business.. generally..

Lake District and Guildford are really nice too... and Edinburgh

I agree with Vikki - Aberdeen is the place to visit.
The natives are extremely friendly. The football team is not very good but they do try hard. Plenty of parks, cinemas, theatres etc.
