Smartassses as you put it... they are usually just answering for points. A good answer is one that comes from the heart, has some documentation, and the person answering usually is answering to try to help, not to score points or throw out stupid one liners. It seems like there's a continuous range of answers with various combinations of both being informative while also showing the answer's pride in the knowledge that they think they have. Human competition leads to people wanting to be best at what they do, including answering questions. So in their mind, if they put you down a little bit in the process by showing how dumb you are, that might make them feel smarter! Sometimes we all might appreciate a very knowledgeable person who has great humility. I wish I could take credit for that, but can't.
