I just started taking tennis lessons and the one-handed backhand feels very awkward. Anybody have any advice?

One-handed backhand is hard to get good at, however, here are some of the basics of hitting one-handed:
1. make contact with the ball just before the ball reaches the front leg of your back hand side. (right leg for right hander and so on)
2. make sure you turn your shoulder well, like you can touch it with your chin when you turned it.
3. hold the throat of the racquet with your other hand, bring the racquet back as you're about to hit the ball.
4. when you are hitting the ball, make sure you let the racquet drop (drop your wrist) and swing it foward from low to high just like when hitting a forehand.
5. use your fore-arm to make the racquet come over the ball to apply topspin, basically you don't want to use your entire arm nor elbow, but try to use more of your fore-arm if the ball goes long. If the ball goes to the net, try to push the ball more before you come over the ball.
Anyway, hope that will help, just practice and practice.

Dominant Male, Justine Henin has the best single handed backhand in the WTA and according to John McEnroe among all the active Pros. For 2 handed backhands yes Maria is amazing. On the ATP the best is Richard Gasquet with Roger Federer a very close second. Haas & Blake & Nalbandian would round out my Top 5. And since I don't consider a two handed backhand to be in a Real Man's arsenal there aren't any in my TOP 5. Leave the double fisters for the ladies and the children but not the dominant males right buddy.

Use a two-handed backhand. It gives you more support and it feels more natural because it's like hitting a baseball. The most important tips are: Make sure your racquet face is perpendicular to the ground and when you hit a backhand, lean forward as far as you can without falling down. This will help you put more power into your backhand shots. Finally, put yourself in a positions where the ball is a few feet away frow you so that you can extend your racquet out. One of the biggest problems is hitting a ball that's close to your body.

Use a two handed backhand for now until your arm gets used to it. I can hit a great one handed and that is what I did. Patients. you will get to that point soon enough.

yeah, go to the two handed backhand! ive taught tennis for years, id rarely ever teach a young kid, which im assuming you are semi young, a one handed backhand. two handed is a lot easier. once you get that down, then you can move to the one handed if you want.

Well, depend if you are comfortable with a two handed backhand or a one hander.........I tried a two hander, didn't work for me..so I went with a one hander, and it fit me......

Advice for a one hander, wind up as far as possible, bend shoulder, step into it, and full swing.......I don't know if that help, but practice is key!

Listen "redsoxfan" I am the "worlds' greatest Yankee fan"....so don't you tell anyone I helped you......assuming you are right handed.....take your right hand back like you are about to hit a back hand....and let your elbow "make love" to your "navel"(ala John McEnroe)....in other words wrapped the entire arm around your body like you were reaching into your left rear pocket making you turn your shoulders....then visualize a tree limb that you have pulled back and then let it go.....let you arm "whip" forward like that tree limb and then finish with your "knuckles" pointed forward (ala Ivan Lendl).....if you want it to go down the line wait until it is lined even with you.....to go cross-court hit it just in front of you.......when you get this "****" all down and you make the tour don"t you dare tell anyone that a "Yankee" fan helped you for I will come out of the stands and "knife" you when you least expect it......I will still be expecting my 1% fee when you do make it however!!!!!!!!!!!!...PS: the two handed backhand is for "girly men"....stick with the one hander!!!!
