Oh joy lucky you! We too had the exact same problem last year. However I have a small child and couldn't risk bombing the house or spraying poisons in the house-plus the smell it leaves behind wasn't an option either.
Best and safe idea that I was told by my vet-
1 sprinkle your carpet w/ regular table salt, and Borax laundry detergent. Leave it there for 24-48 hrs then vaccum. BESURE to empy your vaccum immediately incase there are still some live fleas. Then repeat the procedures in 24 hrs. You can also add the Borax and the salt onto your furniture as well..won't hurt it at all.
2nd step...you can also take a flat clear glass baking dish-add about 1/4-1/2 cup of water in the dish and a drop or two of dish soap, put a white piece of paper under the dish before sitting it on the floor and turn on a night light beside it before you go to bed....the light and the white paper will attract the fleas they will jump into the dish of water and not get back out. Change it out everyday and set it back out before you go to bed.
We had fleas BAD and they all went away in just a matter of weeks.
As for the kitty-they have the flea advantage thing for them...that's the best thing to give them or the drops.
Good luck and hope that helps...I can garuantee it will!!

You might want to think about putting down some diatimacious earth around the perimeter of your house. It is an all natural bug killer that goes into the earth and any bug that crosses it, loses its outer shell(extoskeleton). You can get it, or atleast order it at any feed mill. I use a coffe can with holes in the lid, my husband even put a handle on the can for me..and I use it all around the house, it can even be used directly on your pets, but not if you already are using something like advantage. There is also Sevin dust, another inexpensive product most feed mills carry, that is safe enough to use to kill bugs on your veggies in the garden and have them safe to eat within days..
If you dont have fish, or birds or other pets like that in the house, I would do as suggested though, and just buy a few bug bombs too, make sure you do the basement, and one for every room..make sure you time all this with the timing of the next dose of the advantage...and that should end the problem.

Here is a really cheap safe and effective way to do it.....
I know with pets in the house you want to be careful of what you use because you don't want to hurt your furry friend or your family, so here is what my mom ( who is an all natural kind of woman) would do when i was growning up. get a few night lights at the dollar store buy a few plastic bowls and some dawn dish soap with a bright color like yellow or green. plug the night lights into the most flea ridden areas take your bowls fill them half way with water then put enough dish soap to cover the bottom of the bowl place your bowls under the night lights and turn the night lights on even in the day. the fleas will jump into the bowl and die. the dish soap glows to them giving them the moth to the flame effect. try this for a week and the fleas will be gone. just remeber to change out the water and soap when the bowl gets a bunch of fleas. and don't mix the soap in the water to make bubbles just let it sit at the bottom.
be well

Go to Walmart and get a bag of Sevin rose dust. It's cheap. Take an old nylon sock and make a dust bag by pouring Sevin into it at tying it off. Then dust your cat and your cat's sleeping area, catbox, anywhere the cat has been. Also dust the sweeper bag. This way you get the Sevin EVERYWHERE! When the new fleas immerge, the dust kills them, and this is SAFE! A vet told me about it years ago and I've NEVER had fleas since!

I have had the same problem. Go to a store with a garden center and get Sevin Dust. It is used for keeping bugs off of plants, but it is safe for use on and around animals. Spread it on the carpet, leave it set for about 4-6 hours and vacuum. Repeat if neccesary. It is only around $6 for a 5lb. bag.

They have these deflea bomb type things at pet stores. They basically set off fumes in the house that will kill the fleas. But no people or animals can be in the house when you use these. Ask a sales associate at a pet store they can help you too. Good luck.
