Right (Republicans) and Left (Democrats) are convenient shorthand for ideological tendencies.
In different countries, the actual policy positions of that country's Right and Left wings will vary. But in general, the Left is more progressive (what critics call "liberal") and the Right is more conservative (what critics call "reactionary"). What does that mean? Progessives generally favor social policies that promote social equality (more even distribution of wealth & power among citizens), broader social freedoms but more limited economic freedoms (in the US, for the rights of minorities and women, but against "corporate power"), and foreign policy based on diplomacy. Conservatives generally favor social policies that promote social inequality (greater disparities between wealthy and poor), more limited social freedoms but broader economic freedoms (in the US, against same-sex marriage & women's reproductive rights, but for strong property rights for those with property), and foreign policy based on military supremacy. In most countries, the Left is closely tied to the labor unions, to minority advocacy groups, to the women's movements, and to students; the Right is closely tied to majority religious organizations, to the dominant racial group, and to big business.
Left and Right are relative terms, and they change over time. In the 1990s, US President Bill Clinton was criticized as an ultra-leftist for attempting to create single-payer health coverage for all Americans. Yet just two decades before, ultra-Rightist US President Richard M. Nixon had suggested the exact same policy reforms. The USA had moved so significantly to the Right as a country in those two decades that what had been politically viable for a right-wing Republican was now too leftist for a centrist Democrat.
In the USA, the Right today is dominated by the dual interests of social conservatives (Christian extremist groups) and fiscal conservatives (Big Business). The Left is not dominated by any one group, but is a loose and often ineffectual coalition of many diverse interests including feminists, environmentalists, what remains of the US labor movement, and ethnic and sexual minority action groups. In the 21st century the Left has failed utterly to take power in America, and the Right has failed utterly, having taken power, to govern effectively.

democrats get caught faster than republicans. seriously... compare the corrupt republicans with the corrupt democrats. almost without exception, the republicans manage to accumulate more swag before they get busted. compare duke cunningham with jefferson.
that is the only truth i have ever observed... everything else is lip service. decline to identify with either party, choose the candidate that suits your needs.
for me, those candidates wind up 90% democrat. but i still can't honestly tell you a clear difference between the parties. there are too many individuals on both sides muddying the waters for it to mean much of anything anymore.

Not much really. When you get to the core of it, republicans generally are pro life, pro marketplace. Democrats are pro choice and pro government.
In other words, Dems want to use the government to determine the wealth of the citizens and Republicans want the market place to determine the wealth of the citizens....or Democrats want you to be safe when you fail to succeed in the marketplace, and republicans want you to die a cold lonely death if you fail.

In a nut shell.
Democrats have turned into socialists. Take from the earners, and give to the non earners. Eventually we will have a nation of lazy, poor, non earners.
Republicans believe if you work hard, you should be rewarded. Charity is voluntary.

Yes, you did misspell democrat, but that's o-k. Instead of getting alot of personal opinions to understand. Go to the individual national websites of both parties and read the "platforms". It will let you know what they believe.

Republicans tend to believe in minimal government, in free trade, in individual resposibility. Democrats tend to believe in government as a solver of problems, in regulations, and in collective responsibility. Considering this, it will not surprise you to learn that Democrats will as a rule want to increase taxes to pay for more government, while Republicans tend to want to reduce them.

Republicans think that poor people have too much money and rich people do not have enough. Democrats think that rich people have too much money and poor people do not have enough. Their policies mostly flow from those basic philosophies.
