I talked to SBC my ISP for 2 hours to no avail.
I need to change it back to the correct IP address but it will not allow it and when I reboot the bogus IP address comes back?
How can I fix this?

We tried changing the IP and doing the Release and Renew, but the same IP address comes up, they gave me a new one to enter and it would not change everytime it goes to this 169XXXXX IP address. No matter what we try to do.

I did disconnect for over night and reconnected and it still came up the same IP Address, I did release and Renew.
Says it can't RENEW my IP Address.

Your ISP controlls your IP Address NOT your computer.
It is assigned by them and they can change it any time they want.
You may have the same IP Address for a year or it may change hourly <-(rare) but they controll it.

What everyone else is talking about are DHCP addressing. Its correct that it doesn't matter if your IP changes if this is what you are using.

But not everyone has this. If you have your own router/network (for instance if you installed a wireless router), you might not have DCCP turned on and even if you did, you would not be getting Your IP from your ISP, it would be gotten locally. /renew requests would go to your router, not your ISP.

If you IP was changed you have to have an account with Admin priveledges to make the change back. SBC *should* be able to walk you through this.

If worse comes to worse, disconnect all cables and see what shows up then.

No need to panic, Taylor. Most all ISPs assign dynamic IP Addresses based upon the requirements of their Server. A Static IP is a very costly thing, if you really want to opt for it.

Though you IP Address will keep changing, it''ll be within a scope given by the ISP while provisioning, so it wont effect your bandwidth or anything else such as access.

Maybe your ISPs guys didn't know how they could've taken the Opportunity to sell you the costly Static IP Address as my lads would've certainly done! Their loss!

as other people said u will get a different ip address after your current 1 expires, if u need to have the same ip address ask SBC for static ip address but this will cost u a lot more on your bill. since they would need to asign a private ip address just for you.

IP address given to you by ISP's will always "expire". You are given difference IP addresses often.
Try going into a command line (Programs, Run, type "cmd")
Type in ipconfig /release. Wait a little bit, then type in ipconfig /renew.
This will get a new IP address from the ISP.

You can't get it back, so far as I can tell. Your IP depends on your ISP; if you have dialup, your IP will be different each time you log on. Can you get a hold of your new IP and use that instead of the old one?

It will change unless you are paying for a package with a static IP address.
