Pro - Allows for the expression of unpopular ideas and to keep the majority from silencing the minority.
Con - Certain protected speech can and has in the past, incite violent actions against the target of the hate speech. Can expose young people that are very impressionable to negative or abberent ideas.
I for one believe that Freedom of Speech is the most abused right in this country and it needs to be either curtailed or a set of guidelines adopted for what sppech is protected. The problem is that I do not feel that the current government, clergy, or society as a whole is qualified to objectively make the necessary judgement calls on the subject.

When you have freedom of speech, putting up with hate speech is the down side but still a small price to pay for not having the government decide what in acceptable and censoring the rest.
If you think we still have freedom of speech then test it, post on a website that you are so frustrated with the state of affairs in this country that you feel that if "someone would shoot GWB you'd give them the bullets" then set a timer and find out how long it takes for some of Georgie's gestapo to show up on your doorstep.

All speech is ultimately instrumental in attempting to prove the opposite point.By allowing hate speech we put a spotlight on the psyche behind it,and it is that what causes real social change. The downside is that it can be disquieting to minors and people who do not undertand that hate speech cannot be viewed as a viable opinion.

In the USofA, the first amandment to the constitution guarantees us the rught to free speech, even if that speech condones or supporst hatred toward others. This has often been interpreted in law as meaning that you are free to say ALMOST anything, but not to advocate actions contrary to law (e.g. you are not allowed to foment armed insurrection, conspire to commit criminal activities, etc.)
The danger in curtailing free speech is that may it lead to suppression of dissent. (See Nazi Germany.)
