A lot of people in the US seem to think that because they live in the US, they are automatically free. They also think that America is the most free country in the world. A lot of countries are MUCH more free than the US is. I think what people don't realize is that freedom isnt free. You have to fight to get it and you have to fight to keep it. Government acts like the Patriot Act have taken a lot of our freedom away and no one is raising an eyebrow. Why is this?

I am from the US and lived there all my life until two years ago. Since then I have lived In Australia and Switzerland. And in Australia I felt much more free than I did in the US.

We're like lobsters comfortably languishing in a pot of lukewarm water. Only when the water begins to boil will we scream in agony over our own apathy.

You're right: America isn't all that "free" anymore.

Thomas Jefferson once said; 'The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.' Unfortunately, that time is way past due. But we're just "too damned comfortable" to pay any attention to such dumb things as patriotism, freedom, and standing up for our nation.

So, as long as our corrupt politicians can distract us with trivial non-binding resolutions about gay marriage and flag-burning, nothing will change. And as long as we allow ourselves to be pre-occupied with maxxed-out credit cards; $3.00-a-gallon fuel for our $60,000 USVs; Britney Spears' love life; professional landscaping for our $400,000 houses; Jacko's pedophilia; "low prices - everyday" at WalMart for junk we don't need; and the latest rankings of our favorite baseball teams, the sleaze-ball politicians will continue to enrich themselves, sucking off the taxpayers' teat. -RKO-

Wisdom has never been spoken any better. I often wonder about the same things I supose that we ahve been told we are free so long that we believe it no matter waht happens. Americans associate the word freedom with America and in many cases it no longer applies...I asked a question here in answers should we concede our freedoms to fight for freedom? And most had no clue what I was talking about and others thought it was a fair trade off!!!

Most people place freedom way down in their priority list. They put things like security and welfare above freedom and get to it when it's convenient or when lack of freedom is inconvenient.

The US is far from free. You are not free to have a voluntary transaction between two individuals without government coming in and forcing you to give the government some of your money. You are not free to put whatever you want in your own body. You are not free to own weapons that would protect you from an oppresive government.

We all have the right to be free to do whatever we want, as long as we do not interfere with that same right to freedom for others.

How free are you willing to let others be?

I am free.
I'm not sure what other countries you are talking about.
I guess your view depends are where YOU are from.
I don't think our freedom is free. I would fight for it.
I have friends in the military, I just decided not to join, I was checking out the air force. But that doesn't mean I sit around expecting other people to protect me, I would pick up a gun and go if I was called to do it. I would be out there on the street if it was on US land.
I think the government is messing with the laws too much. Many of the laws have worked for years but we have to rewrite them and rewrite them. I don't always agree with the changes.

Freedom is supposed to be taken for granted. You're not supposed to feel grateful for not being tortured or beaten. But with freedom comes responsibility. Many people think freedom means doing exactly as you please without considering the consequences. Such people say "It's my life, I can do as I please" and 'Nobody can tell me what to do because I'm free." They forget that freedom is compromised when there is no regard for the rights and needs of others.

True, we do have to fight to keep our freedoms. Unfortunately we are fighting Iraq for no reason (other than to make people rich who profit from war) when we really need to be fighting the corrupt politicians who are taking away our freedoms.

The less educated are the more easily led. Keep them ignorant and attack the credibility of those who resist. It's the Rove way.
