Actually, the fact is the early bird only catches the early worm - and I don't know about you, but the ripest pickings are from those who have had a chance to wash up, rub the sleep out of their eyes and generally acclimate into their day, not those who just stumbled (or the worm equivalent) outta bed. I know what I look like first thing in the morning, god help me. No one would wanna catch me then! It just goes to show you that sleeping in is, in almost every case, a good idea that's gotten a bad rap.
Now as far as your rodents go...some smart little vermin used the whole "early bird" myth to his advantage. On that fateful morning Wise Old Jimmy Mouse convinced Dull Donald Mouse to "get the cheese before it gets hard on the edges". Dull Donald, being Dull and a Donald, took the bait - literally. In the meantime Wise Old Jimmy was able to stretch, read his paper, drink his juice and then go grab his treat with no threat of a broken neck.
Early bird my patootie!

If the mouse is second, why would there even be any cheese left?

I would rather catch the worm than the cheese. Cheese has blood on it from the loser.
Worm is nice.

Which is why birds eat worms instead of cheese... or we'd have to change the saying.
