The concept of "middle age" has changed drastically since the "baby boomer's" began to approach their 50s. Statistically, the average American can expect to live to their mid-70s, so middle age is considered to be about the ages of 40-60 years old. However, few people in that category would consider themselves middle-aged. How would youu define middle age?

My dictionary says that middle age is 40-65.

I'm old school and I freely claim that I'm middle-aged. To me, it's just an age bracket. It allows me to identify my approximate age group without being specific about the number. I suppose I could say "baby boomer," but that might have some extra connotations (such as political connotations).

I could just say my exact age, but my wife doesn't like when I do that. Her age is a closely guarded secret (she's old school too), and she's afraid that if people know my age they'll get a pretty good idea of her age too. So I'm in the habit of keeping quiet about my exact age (even on the Internet, in case any acquaintances see my messages). :-)

Well, I must say I like many of your answers even if I am not the one that asked the question. This must be my "from a personal point of view" day as I am seemingly having to answer from that perspective.

A friend of mine is retiring from the Fire Department. I am just beginning my life... He is several years younger than I am. Middle Age can be defined by a number, but it is mostly defined by the state of mind.

I care for a friend that could be considered elderly because of her physical condition. She is again, several years younger than me. I ride my bicycle like I did when I was 16 years old. I leap over curbs, etc... I didn't even stop skate boarding down mountians until I was 38. I may even take it up again, but skip the mountians. However, my body has changed considerbly. I am over weight regardless of what I eat, and the amount of activity I do. They say that it may be a genetic issue... I hope not. I want to get rid of the excess weight. Oh, I am still strong as a bull. A couple in their 30's struggled to get a safe into their cart. They asked for a carry out, so they wouldn't have to put it in the car. I picked that safe up and put it in the car like it was light weight. They looked at each other and then looked at me and asked, "How old are you again?". I guess if you feel limited in your mind, you become limited in everything else.

MIddle aged, can really only be define by the day you die. Then divide the years by 2.

What a horrible question, confronting middle-age and the mid-life crisis that goes with it is too painful! It's ironic that at the point when a person starts to be free of underemployment, diapers, etc. is the point when the bod starts to do its own thing. On the other hand, even as I admit to entering middle age (I'm 39) I've never felt more free and excited to be alive. Maybe it's because at this age I've finally stopped giving a crap about what the rest of the world thinks.

You're right although I think that word is about to be banished from future vocabulary since 40 is the new 30 and 50 is the new 40. The 40 year olds of today feel, dress, and look a lot younger than they did 20 years ago. I would say it begins when you don't feel as young.

I would say middle-age right now would be around 40-50 years old. Although as the years pass by, the middle age range will get higher. 65 years old might be considered middle aged by 2050.

I don't really think that being "middle aged" is about a number. I think it is more about how old you feel and how you feel about the life you've created up to that point. I hope that I"ll never "become" middle aged because I want to keep more new dreams alive throughout my life -- even after I fulfill old dreams.

I wonder. The things they can and do manage to achieve with modern medicine and surgery may allow some one of my age to live to be one hundred and ten. I'm forty five so this would grant me sixty five more years. My middle age wouldn't start for another ten years. If I can keep the stress out of my life and take care of myself with good diet and regular exercise it could be a good sixty five years!

Middle age is about Forty years old. You're not too young and you're not too old. You're just in time for a mid-life crisis. It's the beginning of the end.

I'm 54, and consider middle age to be the thirties. sixty would be halfway to 120, and who lives that long?
