A good question. It is a little like climbing a mountain because it's there. I definately think that they are obsessive, answering questions has become an end in itself. They are obviously very competitive people, who simply want to be thought of, as best. Trouble is, that the rest of us haven't a clue who they are. I guess they will brag to their friends though.
There is a huge problem with just going for points, per se, because you are not going to want to spend too much time giving considered responses: that doesn't get you the points quickly. So, the quality of your answers are probably not going to be that good. Unfortunately, considered answers, initially at least, score the same points as quick one liners.
Can we conclude, therefore, that high scores = poor quality. If so, what have you to brag about?

I think if you reach level 8, you get a letter from the president of Yahoo who thanks you for working as a Customer Service Representative for free.

yeah, they're kind of obsessive. and bored. and competitive.
people read books with thousands of pages though, if one answer is equivalent to one page of a book it's not THAT weird. So maybe it's more bored and competitive.

Depends on how long it took them to get there. If they did it in a year, that would be obsesive.
