It is true. People who are trying to build up points quickly often do the voting since it is a quick way to build up a lot of points. Many don't even read the answers, but just pick the one on top when the asker doesn't answer and leaves it up to voters.

I wouldn't say this is ALWAYS true. I rarely get in as first answer, I always think about what I type and re-edit...but I get Best Answers. Often people answer the same, but sometimes if you word it clearer and include the right amount information it's more valuable to the questioner. Also, I think having a real pic instead of avatar makes you more noticeable.

Yes I vote for the first of the identical answers if they are right.
as every one else could have read the first one and agreed so the first one with the answer gets my vote.

Yes being the first is good, if you have a good answer than your chances of best answer greatly increase. I think it also depends on how many ppl answe and how long the answers are. BUT in theory all askers should coose the best answer to all their questions not leave it to a vote.

I agree that this happens frequently on Y! Answers, but only for the questions that have easy answers, such as the "favorite color" polls and the algebra questions. Sometimes I click to answer a question, and I see the first one or two answers already there just have a single letter in them. I think these people do this to reserve their "first answer" spot, then go back and modify it to make it a descent answer.

I don't think that's true ALL of the time. I have seen lots of 'best answers' chosen that were half-way down the list. I would hope that if people were going to take the time to choose a best answer, they would read all of the entries before choosing one.

Maybe so. I usually look at all the answers before I vote, depends on how many there are.

I think that a good portion of it is that. Obviously if you just have a bad answer, people will find the first "best" answer below yours.

Not always, but there are lots of folks that don't really care about the answers, so yeah, they're likely to do just that.
