why not both? consider the Russian River area in CA. You can camp. hike and picnic in Redwoods thousands of years old. Then take a swim in the Beautiful Russian River. Drive a few miles east to be in the wine country, a few miles west to be on the Sonoma Coast state beaches! Want a change from all this rural spendor? San Francisco is less than 100 miles away!

the beach is easier ,but i prefer the Mt's.. we used to go hiking every weekend.. and it was tough.. id bring friends with me and watch them struggle to the top of a hiking trail.. i'd take a lot of pictures along the way and there would be "scowls" on all their faces.. but when we got to the top and lunched overlooking the lush valleys below their response was always the same , "can we come back next week?" this helped me develop a lifetime philosophy. "the harder it is to accomplish something the more rewarding and memorable it is"... the beach can be fun and create pleasant memories ...but the mts are truly rewarding.....get yourself some good shoes plenty of water and start out real early... the earlier the better... even if you decide on the beach... sunrise is a special time..

The mountains are beautiful but the beach can be fun, too. We went to the Smoky Mountains last July and it was beautiful there.

I grew up on the beach and never liked the hot, sandy, stickyness. We went to Colorado in July and it was the most wonderful, beautiful place I have ever seen. Went river rafting in Durango, went to Mesa Verde NP and saw the indian caves, rented a jeep in Ouray and went off roading. Weather was amazing! I'd move there in a heartbeat.
