I don't think there is anything unsanitary about cooking meat and peas in the same pot. Just make sure that the meat is fully cooked. My mom used to cook ground beef, onions, peas and pasta in the same large skillet for dinner sometimes. She used canned peas so it wasn't a favourite of mine as I prefer frozen peas, but I can remember having this at least once a month all through my childhood. Unsanitary conditions create health problems, my sister and I have health problems, sure, but nothing food or sanitation related.

not really, but it really depends when the peas are put in...if it is tossed in at the same time as the raw meat you may transfer some bacteria. plus, the meat takes longer to cook than the peas, so if you start them at the same time--one is going to taste funny...

as long as you reach the 'safe' temperature for the meat (which varies depending on type and cut), you're not doing anything 'unsanitary.'
and, due to the nature and size of most vegetables, by the time the meat is satisfactorily cooked, the vegetables are thoroughly cooked as well.
here are a couple of links for appropriate meat temperatures, just in case you were wondering...

I've often wondered the same about roast in a slow cooker with potatoes and carrots...and I've been eating that my whole life and haven't gotten sick or died...so whats a little unsanitary?
REally I think it is though.
