I have a yearling Blk & Wht paint gelding and he started to brake out on his legs & neck from what I think might be Avon skin so soft and or Bronco fly spray. Has any one had this problum & what can I do? And is to much long green grass bad for him?

I agree w/ the other postee's...have your vet check him out. More than likely it was the Bronco fly spray that caused him to break out-especially if he's white in those areas. His pink skin will be more sensitive than the darker skin. Avon skin so soft shouldn't harm him if it's diluted/mixed correctly. I use only al la naturale' products on my paint horses because of the sensitive skin they have-mainly the Avon skin so soft mixture. Also besure and keep a fly mask on him if he's white around his eyes, and use a sunscreen for his pink areas on his face...skin cancer in horses isn't uncommon...that will show up as a rashy appearance and be rough to the touch. I had to battle that w/ my paint stallion from last year...have learned my lesson there!
*Too much green grass will cause colic and skiars...but I must ask where are you located to be ever so lucky to have too much grass? LOL! Everyone I know is hurting due to the drout and is having to feed hay through summer. I must ad if you have grass I am very jealous...and I sure my horses would be as well! :)
Good luck!!

To much of anything is bad for an animal (or person for that matter). It is a well known and proven fact that ANY animal can develope allergies (at any stage in their life) just like humans do.

Wash him down good with a vet reccomended shampoo, (or baby tear free shampoo if you won't go to a vet). Soothing brushing, and a bath every day, or every other day.. will really help ease his itchy or rashy skin problem.

Try to keep the areas clean, and dry (except when washing).

Last but not least, let a trained VET look at him, you never know what diseases, allergies, or other health issues might be causing his break outs. Also never put things on an animal that are meant for humans (such as Avon skin so soft, or any kind of bug repellent product not meant specifically for his race and age.)

Too much long green grass can be very dangerous for a horse causing a condition called laminites which is extreme cases can result in the horse requiring euthanasia. The think to keep an eye on is your horses weight - if he starts to get fat with a very cresty neck then it is essential you put him on a diet. A yearling such as your is less likely to be affected by laminites as a fully grown cob type horse but it has been known! Long green grass can also cause colic if the horse over indulges when he isn't used to eating such high quality grass.

With regards to the allergy, yes horses can react to lotions & potions - stop using the Avon Skin So Soft immediately - it is meant for people not sensitive skinned horses! Many fly sprays can cause allergic reactions in horses, find a homeopathic based fly spray with a high Oil of Citronella content as this should hopefully cause your horse to react less. I use a fly rug on my horses to minimise the amount of chemicals I put on them.

I had an arabian mare that was allergic to fly bites, she would get so bad she would rub her mane and tail off every summer, nothing i tried topically would repell the flies enough, I did have the vet give her an allergy shot in the summer months , that didnt even prevent it 100%
Also horses can get mange, as well as lice. He may even be allergic to something in the tall grass.
As for to much grass...search for the term FOUNDERED or Founder this is a condition causing lameness due to too much green grass. I know it does nt make sense but check it out.

Horses get gas from green grass it isn't bad for them though. Horses can have allergies but yearlings have very sensitive skin. Also they can get whats called Sun Spots from over exposure. The best bet is to have the vet come out and check.

Yes they can break out from fly sprays.
I have one who gets welts from some types of spray.
Try switching to something natural I use Nature's defense on my one horse as his skin is sensitive to some sprays.
Grass can be the main part of a horses diet but to much to fast can make them sick. You do not want him to founder from too much grass. But by now in the summer he could be on pasture for most of the day safely.

For the previous poster- she put skin so soft on her horse because it is known to keep misquitos and flies away.

For the asker of the question... horses can have allergies and skin sensitivities.

your vet can do an allergy test from a blood sample, and test all kinds of things. get this done, then avoid whatever he's allergic to. if that's not possible, there are all kinds of medicinal and holistic treatments for allergies in horses. ask your vet.
