Discipline in the class is key to success nowadays. Kids are getting ruder and ruder as time goes by. I recently started teaching and I am shocked at how some kids talk back to authority figures. It's not what it used to be anymore. In a time where technology is moving fast, make sure you are computer literate... many projects are not done using computers (we're talking about webpages, powerpoint, etc)....heck, even our report cards are all electronically done. Most important of all, enjoy it!

Read Parker Palmer's article, "The Heart of a Teacher" in Ornstein et al Contemporary Issues in Curriculum. In fact, I would just order the whole book.

Find any information about the state standardized tests for your grade level. That should provide you with a snapshot of what content you need to teach. There is also a wealth of multi-level math content on pbskids.org/cyberchase which is appropriate for elementary learners and aligned with the national standards.

I would probably talk to the administration about their current practices. Except for some new "buzz words" and such there have been that many changes in the last three years. If you are returning to basically the same type of school (i.e. suburban, rural, inner city) then things shouldn't be too different.

I think the main thing is to know how to handle the children's disobedience problems. That and the standardized tests seem to be what causes more stress for teachers now days.
