Alternativly lock the little b*astards up for the whole of their sentence so if you get 3 years you serve all 3 years in a 6 x 6 cell with a bed a toilet and the book of your choice. No visitors and a noose in the corner hanging over a stooll if it all gets too much for them. Lets see them re-offend after that.

New England tough on crime and this time we are serious!!!!!

Along with poverty and promiscuity, disinformation and misinformation are among the most responsible for this disaster. Lack of good role models is also part of it; athletes and make believe actors are forced upon the youths as such. Most importantly, those in society who take a stand are vilified by big interests, by the so call media, and ignored by us. Let's remember! the more educated and informed the people are, the less costly mistakes they make and therefore, less profit for at "all cost profiteering". Parents, it seems, have forgotten what they are here for. If we really mean to do something about this, let's take a moment to analise each of those points and beyond; surely we'll come up with a good answer.

What is your evidence that lawlessness is increasing in society?

The UK murder rate has been pretty static over the last years

The risk of being a victim of crime at Dec 2005 was 23%, the lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981

The personal experience of friends, acquaintenances and my family bear out the above eg the risk of being violently assualted at football matches was very significantly higher in the 70's than it is now

I think any blame can be laid at the door of sensationalising newspapers who take few incidents and then magnify them - fear of crime and the fascination of crime sells newspapers (as George Orwell memorably pointed out in an essay written in the 1940's)

combination of government and the demise of the family. the government for stepping in and not letting discipline in the home. telling our children to tell on whoever whenever they don't have to take responsibility for themselves just tell on someone, and now either both parents have 2 work or there is only one supporter in the family one parent. our children don't have 2 listen 2 their parents and the government tells them that. now we have unruley children with no morals or values.stealing is the rule not the exception.using the children to gain control is evil. now our children have been abused by he government.control by kaos what better way then thru our children. by the way 2 the person who blames single parents most of us want our kids 2 have the other parent there but death is out of my hands. the government lets out seventeen time convicted felon pretending he has changed. years later he gets caught dealing drugs turns snitch or pay the price for breaking the law. no.he sets up some others and he's out on the street. i don't think the welfare of the people even was considered.this particular criminal is above the law 2 reek havic out on the streets he's never had 2 take responsibility for his actions

Our own lack of morals and integrity. How many people do you know who think shoplifting is a hobby? That drugs are a way of life? We live in a do as we please society. We lack the ability to say "no" because we're so afraid of being different. When punishment, like the stocks which publically humiliates, is brought back, I am convinced crime will fall.

The so-called government. The people who run contries have their own little agendas, which usually include "food for me", "drink for me.", "lots of money for me!" Most of the civil servants and politicians do not have a clue, not an inkling of what is happening in real life... until election time, of course.

Sure, they get their information gurus to find out what's what then promise you the earth until they are re-elected. Then it's back to nicely feathered nest, thank you.

They say that you can tel when a politician is lying. His mouth is open and there are sounds coming out. Hmmm?

I agree with Dolphin that it is the fault of parents who not only do not instil discipline but do not teach their children any morals about the difference between right and wrong and leave it to the schools. Teachers have enough to do trying to get the little dears to read and write without having to do the parents job too.

You all have given good answers and are real close to the right answer. We ALL are to blame. This is a country of the people and so on and so forth. The point is we ALL have to stand up and do something to stop it by either our vote or getting personally involved. .

liberal politicians have fucked up everything over the past 30 years allowing a decline in morals to a point were you have an anything goes society mass immigration has also brought a whole raft of problems with immigrants refusing to adapt to our way of life and rather than being told this is how it is have been pandered to to a point that they now seek to force their beliefs and traditions upon the indigenous people eg honor killings

Rather than a specific person, I would look at cultural processes over the long term. As we become more separated from one another (suburbs, less public transport, zoning laws the prevent community meeting places such as cafes in areas where people live) we simply get ruder, more anti-social.
