Fish are extremely relaxing to watch. They povide a different sort of satisfaction then other pets. If you ask most people who keep fish they also have a dog or cat to cuddle with.
They provide a sense of accomplishment as well. A properly cared for tank is beautiful. I have 75 gallon with 9" long goldfish. It is like a living sculpture (especially when a tank is aquascaped well).
Other fish provide fascinating glimpses into a world that is normally closed off to us. Cichlids teach us about balance- they are aggressive so their world is delicate. If you are careless then one of your fish may be killed.
Of course nothing can really compare to the coplexity and beauty of a healthy reef tank.
Most people who have fish consider it a hobby, I don't think dog owners consider themselves hobbyist. It is a completely different sort of relationship. Don't get me wrong, I love each and every one of my fish, they all have individual personalities and some have been with me for years. I have them because they are beautiful and intriguing not because they are cuddly.
(although... my dojos are pretty cuddly. Whenever I clean the tank they swim figure-eights through my fingers. They love to be touched.)

Actually, with Koi fish, you CAN pet them, feed them by hand, etc.
Koi fish can be trained with some work...they're actually really sweet animals believe it or not.
At my job we have a HUGE Koi fish pond with all different types of fish in it (especially Koi) and when they see someone coming up that they recognize, they will actually come swimming over to that side of the pond to greet you. It's really sweet.
They pretty much stay away from the kids, though. lol
Just thought I'd give my input.

Some of them are very beautiful, and it's fun to create miniature underwater landscapes when you're desigining a tank for them. Watching the fish swim and interact with each other can be very interesting, especially if you get salt-water breeds.
A lot of doctors have fish tanks in their offices because watching the fish keeps children amused, and the sound and sight of water tends to soothe nervous patients. It's an excellent policy if you specialize in pediatrics.
I loved my fish because they were gorgeous and funny to watch. I also have cats, dogs and one snake at home. You asked a good question. :)

I don't have an aquarium, but have heard that the presence of the water (especially if you can hear a low bubbling of the water filtration) is both relaxing to the eye and the water sounds are naturally soothing (as we remember the womb sounds).
If all else fails, you can feed the fish to your cat :-)

They are relaxing to watch. I love cuddly, furry animals, but fish are unique because they are so tranquil and quiet. After a long day, sometimes it is nice to just be mesmerized watching them swim, zoning out and forgetting the troubles of the day.

I don't like them! I think they can be pretty, but they are slimey, you can't pet them, and they don't really have that much of a personality. I'll let others have fish, not me!

Well, they are quiet, you dont have to walk them. they dont pee on the carpet, you are less likely to be allergic to get allergies from them, they dont scratch up your furniture, they dont need to go to the vet for shots, they wont run/ fly away when you leave the door open. But i have dogs/cat too
