Well, you have hardrive virtual memory, and RAM which is physical memory. Yes it is always worth upgrading if you are going to keep your computer for a while. I recomend going to crucial.com. There is a small scan that they do to determine the exact type of memory you need. Very easy, and you can get some good prices to.

RAM and memory are the same thing. More RAM is always a good thing. I cant remember about the DDR thing, but you can look uder control panel and it will tell you what kind of CPU, RAM, ect your comp has and how much. You can buy 1GB sticks or 512 MB sticks of RAM, but I wouldnt mix 2 types, as in if you have 2 512 sticks, don't put a 1 GB with it, use the same ones. all you gotta do is buy the same type, once you find out, open oyur computer, with it off and unplugged of course, and look inside. THe motherboard is the big square circuitboard in the comp. It is the biggest one in your computer. The RAM chips are long and flat, rectangular, about 2 inches wide and 8 inches long. No other circuitboards in your comp look like them. There should be extra slots beside them, generally a total of 4. you should already have 2 slots with RAM in it, just line the extra RAM boards up, and slide them in until they wont move. Obviously be very gentle as you do not want to break something. once you put all the RAM in, reboot your system and you should be good to go.

RAM = "Random Acess Memory".. so, yes.
Most stores that sell memory will install it for you.
Some will do it free, othes will make a small charge, but it's still worth if for the peace of mind, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.
