Antivirus software for Macs are not essential but if you want to err on the side of caution, you can do so without spending money. I've been a Mac user for a while and I would suggest you download and install ClamXav. It's a free antivirus software for OS X that's very easy to use.

Mac's are not really exposed to any virus's. Under 5% of the population that owns computers, owns a Mac. The viruses that are out there for Mac are what we in the security business like to call "Less Lethal", meaning that they are less likely to crash or hurt your computer, that having a fly land on it.

Good question... I forgot that there is a such a thing as a Macintosh AntiVirus program. I actually thought that was a PC-only necessity. You might be better off getting one, especially if you do any P2P filesharing or anything.

MAC is not beyond viral attacks; though Windows is more the Target. In your own interests, it would be better for you to have an Anti-Virus on board.
Avast is a very good Anti-Virus which has a free-of-cost license for Home Users which you can download from :-
http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
You'll need to fill in the registration form at :-
http://avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG
and they'll e-mail the product key code free of cost to you.
You can select the skin you like from a great collection of skins that they have there from:-
http://avast.com/eng/skins.html
Check out the links I've given you and just as a thought, you might find it good to ask your doubts about the MAC Version that you have [OSX] using their "Contact Us" option to get more information.
