Yes, Brazil produces a combination of ethanol and crude oil from their own land to meet their gas needs. Be mindful that the US market is roughly 50(something like that) times larger than brazil's oil market. We will have a tough time doing the same.

Brazil have cars that runs on Ethanol (Álcool), but I think there's more cars that runs on gasoline. Two or three years ago, begins the production of "flex-fuel" engines, that accepts any relation between gasoline and ethanol.
All the petroleum is produced by Petrobrás, we don't import oil.
Petrobrás also add ethanol on gasoline, more and less 20%.

A news show like 20/20 or 60 Minutes did a segment on that. Its true. They grow and then ferment sugar cane into alcohol, and do not need to import oil. I remember seeing a Chevy logo on one of the Brazilian cars, so if they can build Chevs there to run on alcohol, they could here, too. Oh and sugar cane would be a profitable crop for millions of people to grow from Mexico to Florida.

Yes. They have cut all dependence on foreign oil. There was mention of it on a Discovery Channel piece hosted by Tom Brokaw on Global Warming.

This site is excellant for explaining that they use ethanol fuel; that is produced from sugar cane.
I do not know the answer about them importing oil. however.
