he didn't actually have any disease at all.

he was afraid of breathing in the mold spores (because he had been told to be) and was pale, weak, and sensitive to light - but only because he was forced to stay in a darkened bedroom and never allowed to get out of bed. He was told he was ill and would most likely die young and he believed it.

But his only illness was lack of exercise.

Because Colin is rejected at birth by his hunchback father, because he reminds his father of his wife who died giving birth to him, Colin believes that he will also develop a hunchback. He believes that he is sickly because him mother died giving birth. Thus Colin believes that he is going to die young.

However, when Mary examines Colin's back, she discovers that he has no hunchback. She confronts Colin to stop his negative thinking and get outside and join the world of the living. She pushes him to good health with fresh air and a little exercise. In the end, it seems Colin's poor health was only in his mind.

Collin didn't die. In the book he had a fear and he kept getting tantrums and stuff like that but then Mary helped him get outside and he got better and he learned how to walk.

i don't know if they ever actually said what his illness was... the way it was described makes me think that it was something like polio, but i don't ever remember seeing a name of what ailed him.
