Amsterdam is nice, though it is a complete tourist trap. They aim for the North American tourist, and as several people have already mentioned, soft drugs, alcohol, and prostitution are fairly prevalent. If you want a little pot to smoke, or other recreational drugs, visit a coffee house. If you actually want coffee, go to a cafe. If you want to view the girls, take some time to visit the Red Light District. There are plenty of sights to take in there, but mind your manners! If you want to take pictures of the ladies in their booths, you'll have to ask permission (and probably pay). Don't forget to have your picture taken with the Penis Fountain and to visit the Sex Museum either! So... quite honestly, Amsterdam is a fun party city for tourists but if you want to experience the true Netherlands, hop on a train and go explore some of the smaller towns, or better yet, take a bike tour.

Nice place. If you're American and only speak English, they're multi-lingual. Drugs are available like beer in bars. Red light district is surreal but a must-see even if you don't partake. Safe travels.
