What does a "starter" look like as used in the 1800's on war ships?

These "starters" were made of rope and used by the Bosnmate to hit sailors that were moving a little to slowly on Sailing ships in the 1700's and 1800's. I would like to know how to make one solely for a nautical display of sailing ship trivia...

It was a really thick peice of rigging rope about 30cm long with a huge knot at one end
