Well the full seven day week was put in place by Pope Gregory when the Gregorian Calender was established, but he didn't invent it.

The Ancient Egyptians were the first to have a 365 day year with a 7 day week. (But they didn't have a 12 month year or a 30 month.) What I like about the Egyptian calender is that the last 5 days of the year were always national holidays and they threw a huge party.

The current 5 days of work followed by 2 days of rest was not established by one person. It evolved over time to its current state. In the beginning everyone worked Monday-Saturday and got off Sunday for religious holiday. Then during the Great Depression, labor unions pushed toward a 5-day work week (Get Saturday off) and Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal made it permanent and national.
