You go out to eat at a nice restaurant. You order your food, then the family from hell sits down next to your table. Four kids, two in high-chairs, one 5 year old, and one 6. The babies are screaming, the older ones are running around, the parents ignor them. To top it off the father chews with his mouth open and burps loudly.
Am I being punished for something, or does this crap happen to any of you? (And don't even get me started on talkers in the theater, or cell phone users in cars).

To Mother of 2, I look at them as they are running a red light in front of me because they are too busy talking on the damned cell phone!

It really gives parents a bad name who DONT let their kids act like that in a public place (I would leave before I would allow my kids to act like that much less what trouble they would be in when they got home!!)
Seriously, just look at the dad....Its no wonder the kids are the way they are! I have asked to be moved to a different table and have been accomodated. Next time, dont be afraid to ask...Its your evening to enjoy too, dont let the Clampetts ruin it for you! On behalf of parents everywhere who DONT let their kids act like that...We are sorry! LOL

Well. I have 5 kids of my own & the only "restaurants" I feel comfortable taking them too are ones that have a play room. That drives me nuts too. If I want a nice quiet meal, I get a babysitter. Why should everyone else have to get a taste of my hectic life?!
In my own defense, I take my kids with me EVERYWHERE I go. I get a babysitter 2 or 3 times a year. The last time my husband & I went out for a meal was x-mas holidays.

Just this Saturday, we had gone to watch Superman Returns and there was exactly the type of family you have described sitting behind our row. The kid was demanding in a loud voice from her sister what was going to happen next, when would Superman come etc. and the girl had apparently seen the movie loads of times so she was also excitedly telling her what comes next. At last, exasperated, we had to turn back and utter a sound of protest. Only then the elders hushed their children up and we could see the film more peacefully.

I have five children, ages 1-12. We rarely take all of our children out to restaurants, and when we do, if the younger ones are screaming we take them out until they can be quiet. We won't tolerate them running around (that bothers me BIG time). I would ask managment to talk to the parents. There is no excuse for kids running wild in a restaurant. It's bad parenting.

Yes, it happens all the time. Forget the no smoking section--there needs to be a NO CHILDREN section!
A tip: You can avoid this type of situation by not trying to eat in nice restaurants during the first week of the month. That's when the welfares still have enough money to go out.

It happens to me all the time. And the little brat is usually sitting near me and when he screams my eardrum shatters.
Theaters too. I'm always in front of the kid that likes to talk and kick the seat. The other day I was seeing Pirates of the Caribbean and there was a 6 year old sitting behind me. What idiot brings a little kid to a PG-13 movie?

No, you aren't being punished for anything. Nowadays, parents can't seem to keep control over their kids for the fear of being charged with child abuse. I've always believed a good lttle swat on the butt got kids to listen, it worked with my kids and it worked with me when I was little.
Some parents have horrible table manners cos' it was tolerated by their parents when they were little.
Children running around in restaurants can cause accidents to themselves and to others. Especially when the server is carrying a tray with hot coffee on it.
It's a shame our society today has too many rude and obnoxious people living in it.

Yes. I WILL say something in restaurants. Talkers in theatres I throw things at, and cell phone users in cars I flip off.

I tell the waiter to do something about it. The management is responsible for ensuring that dining out is a pleasant experience. In a better restaurant they will change your table and/or ask the offenders to keep it down.
